Vairanenjam is the story of Sakthi, a kind girl whose life revolves around her family. Though she falls in love with her cousin Jeeva, she decides to marry him only after her siblings settle down in life. Jeeva supports her decision and agrees to wait until Sakthi fulfils her commitments. Meanwhile Sakthi's sister Nandini is in love with a man named Anand and gets pregnant. When the family finds out about it, Sakthi takes the initiative to solve Nandini's problems. She meets Anand's mother Vaitheeswari, a prosperous industrialist and requests her to get Anand and Nandini married. Sakthi is shocked when Vaitheeswari tells her that she will agree to the wedding but only on the condition that Sakthi gets married to her elder son Vairam.
