ANSWER WRITING IN UPSC MAINS
Dr.Divyakirit gives anecdotal example of a UPSC answer sheet examiner where he asked him how he understands the tail words in questions and what is the view of examiners on it. The person said that they do not care much about it and they see the question paper only on the first day; after it they just see the answers and if the quality of Mains answers is good then they evaluate the Mains answer sheet positively concluding that the person is worthy of selection. So it is possible that UPSC examiners who check your mains answer sheets do not do minute observation of answers and work broadly in a set framework where they see the content of answers.

ANSWER WRITING PRACTICE FOR UPSC(IAS) MAINS
Hindi medium students should read the questions very carefully. It has happened that the UPSC has used ‘varnan’ translation for ‘discuss’ and then ‘charcha’ for ‘discuss’. Hindi medium students do not have to lose hope in such situation; the idea is that you exhibit a good sense and understanding of the subject matter at hand mentioned in the question and then you will sail through the Mains exam if you write enough well. Through examples from previous UPSC mains question papers, Dr. Divyakirti explains about phrases like ‘mulyankan’, alochanatmak mulyankan, alochnatmak nirikshan, samalochnapurvak vishleshan, mulya-nirdharan, vivechan, vivechana etc and what you are supposed to do with such question requirements.
