How to Make 4/4 Interesting - (Drum Lesson)

Tired of playing the same old 4/4 grooves??? Or simply looking to add some spice to your playing? Look no further!

In today's drum lesson we're covering the concept of (what I call) "3 against 4" patterns - where we add groupings of 3 notes or patterns based in 3 over top of 4/4 time. This is a great way to add some sauce to your grooves, as the patterns of 3 interact with the backbeat of 4/4 and go over the bar lines creating some very cool sounds.

My goal today is to show you a few examples of this concept from my original music, and to spark some ideas for you to add "3 against 4" patterns to your own music.
