Internet users have been intrigued by a very special building in Chiayi City. The small apartment block on Zhongshan Road is home to not two, not three, but seven law firms. The forest of signage on its walls is testimony to the melee of legal expertise at work behind the scenes. But why would all those firms choose to occupy the same building? Let’s head to Chiayi to find out.

Passersby can’t help but look twice at this seven-story apartment block on Zhongshan Road, Chiayi City. It’s plastered in signs for law firms: almost too many to count. One each on the second and third floors, two on the fourth, one on the fifth, and two on the sixth: seven in total.

An internet user posted this photo of the building on Facebook, jokingly warning viewers not to get on the wrong side of this building.

It’s kind of scary! When you walk under it, you wonder who you’ll bump into. You have to be careful what you say.

Nobody is scared of lawyers. Lawyers are there to help people.

The lawyers in this “Lawyers’ Block” are all great people. So our friends on the internet can take courage and start a conversation with them, it’ll be fine.

So why are so many law firms all gathered in one building? Is it something about the fengshui that helps their work?

The law court was opposite, on the other side of the road, until 2007. So it was convenient for going to court hearings. So, one way or another the firms all converged around here.

It makes sense. We all know that cram schools often converge around normal schools. The building is opposite the old public prosecutor’s office and law court, which moved to a new location in 2007. Now the site is occupied by the National Property Administration and the Administrative Enforcement Agency. That has made the connection binding these lawyers less obvious.
