The Fourth Republic of Ghana began on this day in 1993 , following the adoption of a new constitution. It marked the return to multi-party democracy after years of military rule.

Jerry John Rawlings, who initially came to power through a coup toppled the 3rd republic On 31st of September, 1981, a Coup that saw the military government rule Ghana from December 1981 till 7th of January 1993.

He transitioned Ghana to civilian rule on 7th of January, 1993 and served as the first elected president of the Fourth Republic of Ghana from 1993 to 2001, he ran under National Democratic Congress (NDC) political party.

The Fourth Republic has seen subsequent presidential elections and peaceful transitions of power, reinforcing Ghana's commitment to democracy.
