All New TOYOTA C-HR 2024 - Visual REVIEW, exterior & interior, PRACTICALITY

The Toyota C-HR looks fantastic, but is its substance to match the stylish exterior? We spend some time with Toyota's funky hybrid crossover to find out.

From the moment you lay eyes on the C-HR, there's no mistaking its daring design. With an aggressive front end, sculpted body lines, and a coupe-like roofline, the C-HR makes a bold statement. It's a welcome departure from Toyota's typically conservative designs.

Step inside and the avant-garde styling continues with a sweeping dashboard, contrast trim pieces, and edgy contours. However, as visually appealing as the cabin is, there are plenty of hard plastic surfaces as a reminder that this is still an affordable mainstream product.

The C-HR's party piece is its hybrid powertrain options. The volume seller will likely be the 1.8-liter setup producing a combined 140 horsepower. There's also a gutsier 2.0-liter hybrid with 197 hp on tap. Both are purely self-charging hybrids without a plug.

In typical Toyota fashion, the C-HR sips fuel. We averaged an excellent 56 mpg in the 1.8-liter model. However, refinement suffers as the four-cylinder engines sound coarse and strained, especially under hard acceleration.

The driving experience is a mixed bag too. Around town, the C-HR shines with a comfortable ride and light steering. But the hybrid powertrain feels lethargic during highway passing maneuvers. Handling is reasonably tidy, though, making the C-HR relatively fun along twisty roads.

Where the C-HR struggles is interior packaging. The sloping roof compromises rear headroom, and the view out back is obstructed. Cargo space also takes a hit due to the raked hatch design, measuring just 388 liters (13.7 cubic feet) with the rear seats up.
So while the Toyota C-HR turns heads with its bold styling, it comes up a bit short in other areas. Those simply seeking maximum versatility would be better served by more conventionally styled alternatives like the Nissan Qashqai. But for urban dwellers who prioritize design and efficiency, the C-HR could be a compelling choice.
