STORYLINE:

Fighting continued in the Shia neighbourhood of Sadr City on Tuesday after another night of violence.

In the early hours of the morning, fighters received food rations and spent time praying.

As daylight took hold, fighting resumed on the streets of the eastern Baghdad neighbourhood.

Also in Sadr City on Tuesday morning a spokesman for Muqtada al-Sadr called on workers in Baghdad to observe a curfew from 1300 local time (0900gmt).

Elsewhere in Baghdad, a US Humvee was seen burning by the roadside close to the former UN headquarters.

It was not known what caused the fire but Humvees and other military vehicles regularly come under attack from militants around the Iraqi capital.

It is not known if anyone was injured in the incident.
