Commercial establishments in Bengaluru face the threat of their trade licenses being cancelled if 60 per cent of their signboards are not in Kannada by the end of February. This development comes after pro-Kannada group created a ruckus in Chickpete, hurling abuses at Marwari vendors over language issue.

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) will serve legal notices to the shops, hotels, and malls that do not comply with the 60 per cent Kannada rule on name boards by February 28.

BBMP Commissioner Tushar Girinath chaired a meeting regarding the usage of Kannada language on the name boards of shops in Bengaluru.

All hotels, malls, and other shops must mandatorily use Kannada on their nameboards, the city’s civic body ordered, adding that stringent action will be taken against those who do not comply.
