What ARE the Gem Species in Steven Universe?

Today we tackle a very big and confusing subject: What exactly are the gems as a species? What are The Diamond's, what are the Crystal Gems? What does actual science point to being the answer? We know they're aliens, but what kind of aliens? What's their origin?

In this video we discuss the possibility of the gem species being some form of Artificial Intelligence! And if they're artificial intelligence, it means they needed to have been made by someone. Right? If so, by who?
