বাংলা ভাষার ইতিহাস হাজার বছরের হলেও বাঙালির ইতিহাস তার চেয়ে অনেক প্রাচীন। কারণ বাংলা ভাষার উৎপত্তির আগে বঙ্গ শব্দটি যেমন ছিল, তেমনই বাংলার বিভিন্ন প্রান্তে জনবসতিও ছিল। বঙ্গদেশের অনেক স্থানেই খননকার্যের ফলে ঐতিহাসিকরা প্রাচীন জনবসতির প্রমাণ পেয়েছেন। তার মধ্যে সবচেয়ে পুরোনো নিদর্শনটির বয়স আনুমানিক ৪৪০০০ বছর। অর্থাৎ সেই প্রাচীনপ্রস্তর যুগের সময় থেকে বঙ্গে লোকজন বসবাস করতো। কিন্তু প্রশ্ন হলো তারা কারা? কারা বাঙালির পূর্বপুরুষ? কী বাঙালির নৃতাত্ত্বিক পরিচয়? নেগ্রিটো, মঙ্গোলয়েড, প্রোটো-অস্ট্রালয়েড, অ্যালপিনয়েড, নর্ডিক পরবর্তীকালে তুর্কি-তাতার, মুঘল, আফগান, পোর্তুগিজ, ফরাসি, দিনেমার, ইংরেজ ইত্যাদি বিভিন্ন জাতির প্রভাবে গড়ে ওঠে বাঙালি নিঃসন্দেহে সংকর জাতি। কিন্তু বাঙালির ইতিহাসে সবচেয়ে প্রভাবশালী কোন ধারা? -এই সব নিয়েই আজকের পর্ব বাঙালির ইতিহাস।
The history of the Bengali language is much older than a thousand years, despite the language itself being over a thousand years old. The word "Bangla" existed even before the emergence of the Bengali language, and various communities inhabited different regions of Bengal. In many places in Bengal, archaeological excavations have uncovered evidence of ancient civilizations. Among them, the oldest discovered settlement is estimated to be around 4,400 years old. This means that people have been living in Bengal since the time of that ancient civilization. But the question remains, who were they? Who were the ancestors of the Bengalis? In different periods, various influences from different ethnicities such as Negrito, Mongoloid, Proto-Australoid, Alpine, Nordic, and later Turkic-Tatar, Mughal, Afghan, Portuguese, French, Danish, and English have shaped the composite identity of the Bengali people. However, in the history of Bengalis, which is the most influential factor? Today's episode of Bengali history revolves around all these aspects.
