Israeli flag raising prompts protests at Toronto City Hall

A flag raising at Toronto City Hall marking Israel’s independence day spurred protests, amid growing international opposition to Israel’s war against Hamas as it prepares for a promised assault on Rafah.

Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow declined to attend the controversial flag raising, describing it as “divisive.”

Chow said the ongoing conflict in Gaza is causing “deep pain” for many in Toronto, and with emotions running high it is important to show empathy for those impacted by the bloodshed in the Middle East.
