‘Every stage in the pipeline to becoming an engineer is nearly empty for Indigenous Australians, including the very first one – the desire to become one. Universities have an important role to play in lighting the spark of interest.’

Associate Dean (Indigenous) Dr Joseph West (Murawarri), UQ researcher Susan Beetson (Ngemba Wayilwan) and Master of Mechanical Engineering student Tully Mahr (Gundungurra) joined with members of the community in Bourke, NSW, to reflect on the transformative impact of education in our first Return to Country Oration Wednesday 21 February 2024.

The Oration aimed to foster a dialogue about pathways to STEM higher education for students in regional and rural communities.
