1989 Batman Collection - Keaton, Burton, Toy Biz, Kenner, and more!

BATMAN: 1989. Michael Keaton, Jack Nicholson, Kim Basinger, Tim Burton! Often overlooked after Batman Returns weirded everyone out and Batman and Robin made everyone sick, the original 1989 BATMAN movie was less a summer film and more of a massive culture shaking event. 1989 Batmania would have aftershocks well into the 1990s, paving the way for the mainstream image, followed up by the Animated Series, of the Dark Knight. Moody, dark, more like a classic horror movie than the pop art 60s TV show, BATMAN set the tone And provided the template for all the “serious” comic book and super hero movies that followed. And for those of us just becoming aware of the wider world, those 80s and 90s kids who grew up in the BATMAN era, the caped crusader was a daily companion through the TOYS !

From Toy Biz’s original wave of BATMAN movie figures and DC super heroes in summer of 89, to the Kenner Dark Knight Collection that changed the way toy lines were marketed for the next decade, the various plastic Batmobile, Batwing, Batcycles, and Batsuits were staples of the toy box and status symbols among playmates for an entire generation of kids. From water-squirting joker and rope-belt Batman to the multicolor bat variants that packed the shelves of every toy store in the nation and across the world, BATMAN was everywhere. And although he gets short shrift and only meager mention from bloggers, reviewers, and has heretofore been left out of the toys that made us, Batman was every inch the phenomenon that the contemporaneous ninja turtles were or that later kids would find with power rangers and the like. I’ve been dying to ask questions for years, and looking for the archived box art for years too! Wouldn’t that be something... a whole room full of replica bat boxes ...
