Sounds From The Corner : Session #6 MORFEM

In Jakarta, a "normal morning" could be defined through several deadly combinations. That day, my combination was tiny roads in South Kemang, predatory morning commute and a glimpse of torrential rain. Yes, it was a normal morning, I suppose.

On the other hand, Tokove -- my destination that day -- is a combination of several serenity you need most; good food, serious deal of music and great atmosphere. Essentially, the place is a mixture between a music boutique and a café. A temple for musicians, a den for foodies. I'm sold.

The place was still closed when I arrived, around 12. Wood tables were still stacked, chairs were still folded, total silence without any sign of living. Approximately six hours after I arrived -- thanks to Morfem - it was all loud, raw and exciting. As a rock outfit, Morfem is far from complicated. Everything is simple, straight in your face -- plug and play -- kind of business. The session started with my personal favorite; a punishing song 'Hey Tuan Botimen', a perfect appetizer to incinerate the evening.

Led by spontaneity and peculiar sense of logic, the foulmouthed quartet described many things during the interview session. It triggered my curiosity to dig deeper to reveal their perspective towards stuff.

I fired one question about Cindy, a name mentioned in 180 derajat -- Morfem's first single from the second album. "Cindy actually is a dude. Cindy represents all the men in the Glee series. I advised every dude in this country to avoid that series. Imagine a guy singing No Doubt's don't speak to another guy. How fucked up is that?"

Another eyebrow-raiser statement is when I asked about nowadays gig goers. I noticed that they were always commenting on how people watch music gig today. "It's a lot different compared with few years ago. Today, people in music gig acting like some music critic, carefully nodding, flashing all of fancy cameras and forgetting the very basic idea of watching a music performance; enjoying the music," said Jimi. Couldn't agree more.

"It's funny when you're actually dancing to the music and everyone staring at you like you're an alien," Pandu added. Talking about dancing, I danced during a beautiful cover of "Kuning", a song by Rumah Sakit (watch Rumah Sakit's live session here). Overall, Morfem was brilliantly mischievous. Watching the whole session, I was trying too hard not to air-drum (and air-guitar) every song. Try it yourself. Ladies and Gentlemen, Sounds From The Corner presents: Morfem. Enjoy! - TW
