Ganesh Vanare speaks about his love for photography, life-changing experiences, the impact of COVID-19, Instagram, and the rise of short-form content. His pursuit is to capture the extraordinary in the ordinary, showcasing the humanity of moments in his photos.
Vanare's journey in street/travel photography began with capturing everyday moments while commuting to and from college and later work. Losing his job turned out to be a blessing in disguise as it enabled him to focus entirely on photography. He started taking up small gigs for friends doing birthday party shoots, couple portraits, and the like.
During this process of self-exploration and honing his skills, Vanare discovered Instagram and learned about travel and street photography. He started uploading his photos on Instagram, documenting his life. Gradually, he realized that the pictures he had taken were not just pictures but stories captured in a moment, a visual experience that conveys an emotion. As he continued to upload his journey and document different festivals and celebrations across the country, he gained recognition and appreciation for his work.
When COVID-19 hit, Vanare felt stuck as a travel photographer unable to leave his house. However, he made the best of his situation by documenting his life living with his parents at home and organizing all the photos he had taken over the years. The lockdown gave him a much-needed opportunity to stop and look at his work and to go beyond social media to showcase it.
Vanare emphasizes that the driving force for his work is neither fame nor money but the continuous efforts to capture the humanity of moments. He has a passion for telling stories in a single frame. He stresses the importance of consistency in successfully pursuing one's passion and the need to always stay creative. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
