The original story of Chanticleer and the Fox was part of The Nun's Priest's Tale in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales that were translated by Robert Mayer Lumiansky and further adapted by Barbara Cooney.
Geoffrey Chaucer (1340's – 25 October 1400) was an English author and is the greatest English poet of the Middle Ages. He is best known for The Canterbury Tales. If you are a movie buff, Geoffrey Chaucer was a featured as a fictionalized character in the medieval rags to riches story, A Knight's Tale, a favorite in the Miranda household.
This book is a childhood treasure- a gift from my grandmother, who was a book-seller and lover of literature. I'm reading from my copy, which is nearly as old as I am...and that's pretty old. This story may be a little difficult to understand with modern ears, even after an extensive translation and adaptation, You may have to consult a dictionary every now and then, to get the full meaning of the text. I consider this a very good exercise! What a great way to build your vocabulary!
