Because we live in a world that rewards production and tangible outcomes, it’s no surprise that the same standard applies to creativity. When I’m feeling overly fixated on a perfect result, I like to refocus my energy using a Process Enjoyment Test (PET).

Remember that feeling of freestyling and feeling good about your art? PETs can help you get back to that place of excitement and curiosity, regardless of the actual finished product.

PETs are a measurable, and specific creative process with up to four constraints: media, subject, method, and scale. In this episode, I share examples of what each category might look like depending on your medium, share how I’ve applied them in the past, and walk through an outline for building your own PET.

About Kendyll:
Hi friends and welcome to Art Lab! My name is Kendyll Hillegas and I'm a full time commercial illustrator and artist. I’m passionate about understanding the creative process, what supports it, and what gets in the way. So, when I’m not making work for clients, I love exploring the places that art-making and emotions intersect – inspiration, identity, self-doubt, and creative block. These are the questions I come back to again and again, and need to talk about more, so if you’re in the same boat, I hope you’ll join me!
