The first hydrofoil was invented in 1906 by the Italian inventor, Enrico Forlanini. Back then, Hydrofoil boats served as slow watercraft that were built for the mere experience of flight above water. Now, Hydrofoil boats are much faster than regular boats with planing hulls due to the wing-like structure mounted on struts below the hull. These create lift as the speed increases and push the full weight of the boat above the water's surface, to give the illusion of flight.
