We know that not everyone has used Zoom for remote learning before, so we put together a quick video to show you what this videoconferencing tool is like. We think you’ll appreciate the new learning experience. We hope to see you online: http://online.uw.edu.

Are you preparing for your first remote learning experience at the University of Washington and not sure what to expect?

You’ll be glad to know, many in-person classes translate well to live, virtual classrooms using Zoom, a videoconferencing tool.

At the UW, we’ve been using Zoom for several years to help facilitate instruction and discussion in online certificate and degree programs. Many students who’ve taken our online courses report feeling just as connected to their instructor and peers.

A big advantage of meeting virtually is that you get to control your learning environment.

When you first create your account, you’ll be able to set up your computer camera, if you have one, and sound, and control when you can be seen and heard.

When you attend a class you’ll be able to watch and listen to your instructor, view slides and any demonstrations full screen, and discuss with your instructor and peers using your microphone or through the chat feature, depending on your class norms.

You also have the ability to share your screen to present to your peers or share a specific aspect of an assignment or activity that you need further assistance with.

If you need help attending your class session in Zoom, you have access to UW technical support and Zoom support resources.

We know that attending classes online may take some getting used to, but we think you’ll appreciate the new learning experience! We hope to see you in class!
