This black and white 1950s instructional film, “The Arthur Murray Steps in the Bolero,” breaks down the components for this dance. Arthur Murray was an American ballroom dancer and businessman who began teaching dance in 1912 and opened the first official franchised school named after him in 1938. The film is a Coleman Production and supervised by Lee Lawless, a regular performer on The Arthur Murray Party television show (1950-1960) and owner of multiple Arthur Murray Dance Studios. The man is dressed in a single-breasted suit and tie and the woman is wearing a multi-layered ruffled strapless dress and coordinating t-strap high heels. The steps shown are the Side Lift (:27-:40), Box Step (:41-1:01), Open Break (1:02-1:24)), Open Break and Walk-Around (1:25-2:02), Back Spot and Underarm Turn (2:03-2:52), Suavecito (2:53-3:29), Underarm Pass (3:30-4:03), Back Spot and Walk-Around (4:04-4:40), Side Pass (4:41-5:14), Umbrella (5:15-5:49), and Left Turn Walk-Around (5:50-6:27).
