BACKGROUND

Passed down over generations as a traditional melody from Maqam Jiharkah (and less frequently, 'Ajam), the great saint and poet, Sayyid Muhammad Mahdi Al-Rawwās Al-Rifā'i (d. 1870), takes the ardent traveller on a journey to meet the Beloved ﷺ. As he gets closer, his yearning increases until he arrives at his destination - the Illuminated city of Al-Madinah, may peace be upon it's dwellers.

The composition begins with a solo from the marvellous takhmīs of Imām Al-Suhrawardi's famous poem "Abadan Tahinnu Ilaykum Al-Awrah'' by Shaykh Muhammad Al-Yaqoubi.

Ya Hadi Al-Rukban follows the poetic metre Baḥr al-Baṣīṭ, represented by the mnemonic mustaf'ilun-fā'ilun-mustaf'ilun-fā'ilun (مُسْتَفْعِلُنْ فَاعِلُنْ مُسْتَفْعِلُنْ فَاعِلُنْ), and a rhythm called Jammālah (الجَمّالَة) - 4/4 - whose very meaning refers to camel riders. It stirs the emotions of the the traveller, bringing him closer to his ultimate destination.

LYRICS
