Diego Ortiz (c. 1510 – c. 1576) was a Spanish composer and music theorist who served the viceroy of Naples under the reign of Charles V and Philip II, an Italian court under Spanish influence. Ortiz's groundbreaking work includes the publication of the first manual on ornamentation for bowed string instruments and a notable collection of sacred vocal compositions. His first and most famous publication is the “Trattado de Glosas” (1553), or “Glose sopra le cadenze” for the Italian translation. From the second book of this publication, Nele Vertommen and Beniamino Paganini present the second recercada on la canción "Doulce Memoire”. In each of the four recercadas, Ortiz plays with the original melody: with a gradual diminution in the bass (1) and soprano (2), followed by a display of virtuosity in the bass (3), and as pinnacle with the addition of an extra bass line to the polyphonic texture (4). Each variation is a new transformation of this renaissance hit. The cantus-melody, here played on soprano ducian, is borrowed from a populair chanson by the French renaissance composer Pierre Sandrin (ca.1490-ca.1561).
