House sketching tutorial for beginners

Urban sketching, house sketching or travel journaling is rightly having a moment, but how do you get started? Perhaps someone has asked you to draw a portrait of their house - where do you start? In this short film, I show you how I would sketch my home in pen and wash. It's not perfect, the lines are wonky, but does it capture the feel of the place? The question is, does it feel like home?

I am drawing in a Moleskine A5 sketch book, but you can use any paper or book you like. Just remember if you plan to add some watercolour it must be able to stand up to it. I start off with a Uniball Eye pen and then use a fineliner 0.2mm. But again, use what you have. If you plan to put any water on top, make sure it is waterproof. A splash of colour applied with a waterbrush, is as close to how I would be painting 'out in the wild'. If I were sitting outside, rather than in my studio, I would keep all equipment to a minimum and just use what I had to hand. I also show you how you could use grey watercolour brush pens if you want to add tone and shadow. The ones I am using are the WHSmith version of the famous Tombow pen. You don't need them - again just use what you have.

We will work in layers, making sure each is dry in between and in total it took about 25 minutes. The photo I worked from is in the community tab of my channel. Please feel free to use it if you want and tag me @lizchaderton on social media if you share the results, as I'd love to see what you do!
