A Better Way to Roll Initiative in Dungeons and Dragons

Roll for Initiative! This phrase is so damn iconic. Unfortunately, 5e D&D has a lot of issues when it comes to running/tracking initiative. The game slows to a crawl and players, myself included, would sorta just check out. I tried several different methods of tracking initiative, used different tools to speed up the process and make it easier, but nothing fixed the issue. So, I stopped using initiative, rules as written.

Is initiative in Dungeons and Dragons broken? I don't think so, but this is what I switched to and here's why.
