Democracy Report 2024: Democracy Winning and Losing at the Ballot

This is a presentation of the latest Democracy Report from the V-Dem Institute. Staffan Lindberg presents the latest trends for democracy and autocracy in the world and across regions. Among other things, the report shows that the level of democracy enjoyed by the average person in the world in 2023 is down to 1985-levels; by country-based averages, it is back to 1998. 71% of the world’s population – 5.7 billion people – now live in autocracies – an increase from 48% ten years ago. This presentation offers a sober analysis of these trends, providing a valuable opportunity to understand the current state and potential future of democracy globally.
