DCS AH-64D Apache Attack Helicopter Basic Training!

Today we have a One on One training session in the DCS World AH-64D Apache with one of my students.

This student had dabbled in DCS World helicopters and had played around with the Apache using George but wanted to dig in and learn the Cold Start procedures and receive help on how to become more proficient flying the AH-64 and employ her potent array of weapons.

Flying any of the modern aircraft in DCS, like the AV-8B, F/A-18C or F-16C can definitely prepare you for interacting with the avionics of the Apache, but nothing can really prepare you for how to actually fly the aircraft itself.

In this lesson we spent far more time going over techniques and best practices for how to fly the Apache safely and effectively. Everything from how the Student should place his feet on his rudder pedals, control curves and how to actually manipulate the cyclic with your hand.

We of course also got to some Pew-Pew engaging targets with Hellfires, Rockets and Guns, but you’ll notice we did not go into any discussion on Attack Helicopter tactics and what not, this is because most attack helo tactics require the pilot to be able to maneuver the helicopter at very low speeds and hover behind tree lines, buildings etc.

I will freely admit that I am not the best CPG - Copilot Gunner - in the world, but I was definitely able to coach and evaluate my student from the front seat because I know the pilot seat of the apache in and out which I think you can see from our last Apache based sunday mission, linked in the comments section down below.
