The Middle East is simmering with tensions. The volatility caused by the Israel-Hamas war, the Iran-Israel clash, and Houthi attacks in the Red Sea area is threatening major shipping routes. To ensure safe access to trade routes, India is expanding its ties in the Middle East. A part of this strategy is increasing bilateral engagement with Oman. Oman is important for India from both an economic and strategic point of view. The Gulf nation serves as a gateway to the Strait of Hormuz, a major transit point for global oil shipments. Then, from India's maritime security perspective, gaining access to Oman's Duqm port is crucial. As it will help India expand its footprint in the Indian Ocean and counter China. Oman is the only country in the Gulf region with which all three branches of the Indian armed forces conduct regular bilateral exercises. Continued cooperation will enable both nations to contribute to regional security by countering threats such as piracy and terrorism.
