Tragically, on June 2, 2018, Daniel Brophy's life was cut short when he was brutally gunned down in the kitchen of the Oregon Culinary Institute, one of the places where he felt most at home. The shocking murder left the culinary world and the Portland community reeling, as they struggled to come to terms with the loss of such a talented and beloved chef. As the investigation into Brophy's death unfolded, suspicion fell on his wife, romance novelist Nancy Crampton Brophy, who had written an essay titled "How to Murder Your Husband" years earlier. Despite her claims of innocence, evidence mounted against her, including surveillance footage, gun purchases, and inconsistencies in her alibi. In May 2022, nearly four years after Daniel Brophy's murder, Nancy Crampton Brophy was found guilty of second-degree murder and unlawful use of a weapon, bringing a measure of justice to the chef's family and friends.
