The females do not ever leave the ground, and the males only leave once a year to find a mate. Their emergence is timed with rainfall in the dry scrubby parts of Brazil where they can be found.

In the song I suggest that the beetle hears the sound of the rain, but that's just me taking artistic license - in reality we don't know much more than what I've written above about this beetle. It's the only beetle in its genus (no known closely related species), it's red listed, and it's habitat is being rapidly destroyed to make way for monoculture crops.

If you care about nature, you've probably heard similar stories about many species globally, and it's ultimately disheartening. The best thing you can do is try and make space for nature in your life - plant native species, dig a pond, leave part of your garden wild. It will make you feel good and help support nature locally.
