It has been a few weeks since I did my first video on Brighter Shores, the game people are affectionately calling Runescape 4. While Brighter Shores is the work of Andrew Gower, co-founder of Jagex and co-creator of Runescape, this game differs in several ways. Gower has stated that he won’t be selling Brighter Shores. “I can’t see what I would gain from doing so, as I already have enough money. This is a passion project which I want to keep.”

Now some people have balked at the idea of a F2P game that doesn’t have P2W. Everything we have access to right now shows that Gow and Fen Research Ltd intend to release Brighter Shores as a F2P with an optional premium pass. Yes, there is content locked behind the Premium Pass (including Player to Player Trading) and yes locking player to player trading behind the premium pass will upset some people, it is better to have it locked behind the paywall to stop bots, as opposed to having no trading at all. Also, Gower has stated he has thought about the bot problem from the earliest part of the design, and that he hopes bots won’t impact the economy. Hopefully, this also means we won’t need to run multiple alts in order to be successful.

There is no publisher “breathing down” Gower’s neck. He doesn’t have investors to satisfy. His personal stance on microtransactions (he doesn’t like them) is reflected in his belief that part of the game can be given away for free, and the rest of the game development can be supported through a premium pass which gives access to everything.

One interesting difference between Runescape and Brighter Shores is that the tick system from Runescape isn’t going to be used in Brighter Shores. Gower has stated that Brighter Shores doesn’t follow the system that is found in Runescape and Brighter Shores is “much more responsive.” While I understand the tick system well enough in my own head, I don’t think I could properly explain it, so I’m including a video on tick rate -    • GAME-TICKS EXPLAINED (Timing & Manipu...   so you can better understand what it is.

Also, in case anyone was wondering, the game is not an Open World MMORPG, it's a room based MMO where you transition between rooms when you are doing different tasks. What will really make a difference is when we first see the game how “seamless” the transitions between the rooms are. If all the adjacent rooms are pre-loaded and there is no loading screen, then the idea of it being room based won’t be as jarring as it would be if there are in fact loading screens. This will be something we find out early on in the Beta Testing.
