Kai Havertz - 60 Million Down the Drain?

Only the most optimistic Arsenal fan could have predicted that Kai Havertz would become a cult hero at the Emirates. After a largely underwhelming spell at Chelsea, many pundits questioned why the Gunners had splashed the cash to bring him in. But now, it seems Mikel Arteta may have the last laugh. Is it finally time to admit the Arsenal boss was right about Havertz all along?

When Kai Havertz signed for Arsenal last summer, there were plenty of doubts. The German international had struggled to consistently perform at Chelsea, managing just 32 goals and 15 assists in 139 appearances. Everyone was left scratching their heads, questioning what the talented but inconsistent attacker could bring to Arteta's side.

In the early months of the season, it seemed those critics might be proven right. Havertz struggled to make an impact, with everyone was questioning whether Arteta even knew how to utilize him effectively.

However, in recent weeks, Havertz has started to silence those doubters. The 24-year-old has made 9 goal contributions in his last 7 Premier League games, including scoring the second goal in Arsenal's 3 nil win over Brighton on Saturday. His 9 league goals this season are second only to Bukaya Saka, while he's also contributed 14 goal involvements - the second highest in the squad.

When Arsenal first signed Havertz, Arteta was clear about his plans for the player. The Gunners boss envisioned him as a key part of the midfield, telling the club's website: "Kai is a player of top quality. He has great versatility and is an intelligent player. He will bring a huge amount of extra strength to our midfield and variety to our play."

However, it's actually been in a more advanced role as a false 9 that Havertz has truly thrived. This was the position he excelled in during his time at Bayer Leverkusen, and it's allowed him to showcase his excellent movement, hold-up play and ability to link the play.

What's been particularly impressive is Havertz's defensive work rate. He's making 0.5 interceptions and clearances per game - the most of any Arsenal forward this season. His pressing and work rate have been crucial to Arteta's high-intensity system.

Arteta also couldn't hide his delight when discussing Havertz's performances after the Brentford game. "If somebody told me after the first two or three months that the whole stadium would be singing his song with that passion, with that feeling, with that chemistry, I would have found it hard to believe, That's what happens to good people. He's an exceptional player."
