Southern Cross – Long Version - A Montana Ghost Town - near Georgetown Lake, Montana MT

Southern Cross was an 1870’s mining camp named by a sailor for a constellation visible only from the southern hemisphere. Located at 7,000 feet above sea level on Cable Mountain, Southern Cross overlooks beautiful Georgetown Lake and the continental divide in western Montana.

In its prime, Southern Cross had over 500 residents and many buildings including boarding houses, offices, dance hall, post office, stores and a school. The area produced more than five million dollars in gold, silver and copper before it was shut down in 1919.

A note of thanks goes out to my friend Rich who supplied additional aerial footage and the time-lapse videography. It was a great day exploring!

This sequence was shot with two DJI Phantom Advanced UAV drones for aerial views, a DJI OSMO camera and a Canon Vixia HFS-100 camcorder. Post-production was completed with Adobe Premier Plus.
