A usable USB to serial converter with a nice form factor, put not perfect …

A while ago I featured those AZ-Delivery FT232RL USB to serial converter modules in a mailbag (link below). I was high time to put them through the paces.

The good news: They’re cheap, have a lot of features, and I like their form factor for breadboard use. However, they don’t quite behave like FTDI FT232Rs (EEPROM not writable), and they lack a poly-fuse as well as a recommended ferrite bead.

00:00 Intro – a closer look at that USB to serial module
00:19 Chip – FT232-AZ, an FTDI FT232RL made for AZ-Delivery
00:47 Board – everything there is, and it’s not much
02:45 Pin headers – solder in your own for breadboard usage
03:09 Pinout and specifications – as well as a hint at an EEPROM
07:03 FTDI FT_Prog – can read EEPROM, but cannot write it
10:08 Timing and signal levels – of the USB power management
12:31 USB shield – connected to ground
12:47 Real word test – with an serial U-Blox GPS module
13:40 Summary – the good and the bad
16:24 Wrap-up –nice for breadboard use, bye
