Caterpillar fungus, or cordyceps, is called the ‘Himalayan Gold’ for good reason — the herb, often used in traditional Chinese medicine, is worth three times as much as actual gold.

Every year, pickers rush to the Himalayan plateau to forage for pieces of this prized herb. They only have a short two months to hunt for them, as the harvest period occurs between May and June. Here’s how they’re collected and sold.
