Onshape Assemblies feature a variety of Mate types and it's important to know what each Mate type does in an assembly.

Chapters

0:00-1:19 The Fastened mate eliminates all motion.
1:20-2:48 The Revolute and Slider mates allow one degree of freedom with respect to the primary axis
2:49-3:55 The Cylindrical mate allows two degrees of freedom with respect to the primary axis.
3:56-4:57 The Pin slot mate allows rotation about the primary axis and translation about the X axis of the slot.
4:58-5:48 The Parallel mate allows four degrees of freedom; rotation about the primary axis and translation in X, Y, and Z axes.
5:49-6:09 The Ball mate allows rotation about the X, Y, and Z axes.
6:10-6:39 The Planar mate allows translation in the X and Y axes and rotation about the primary axis.
6:40-6:56 Mates can be interchangeable.
6:57-8:35 The Tangent mate is unique and requires a face, edge, or vertex selection from each part to define the tangent relationship.

Sketch entities and surfaces are valid choices to be tangent.

The Tangent propagation option ensures the Tangent constraint is propagated to adjacent tangent faces.
