It's been quite some time since the launch of the Honda Civic FL5 Type R, and we have been patiently waiting for a test car to be allocated to us - as we understand it, there is only the one car and it is slowly making the rounds through the motoring media, and we actually have no idea as to when it will be our turn, or whether it will ever get to us.

Thus it was a great boon to us to have David, one of our viewers get in touch with yours truly and asked me if I would like to check out his newly-acquired FL5 (Japan Spec model) on our favorite mountain. And the story continues from our initial contact.

The Honda Civic Type R FL5, is the latest iteration of the Civic Type R, and is based on the 11th-generation Civic lineup. Building upon the legacy of its predecessor, the FK8, this sixth-generation model is engineered to thrill enthusiasts.

Under the hood lies the potent KC20C1 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, paired exclusively with a six-speed manual transmission, delivering power to the front wheels.

For Malaysian models, owners will get 319 PS at 6,500 rpm and 420 Nm of torque spanning from 2,600 to 4,000 rpm. As for David, hic car arrived with 400km on the clock, and he has since clocked 4,000 km, and he has done some slight tweaking (Stage 1 tune), and the numbers are 350 hp at the wheels, and 500Nm of torque.

David's FL5 is shod with 19 inch Michelin PS4S, with stock brakes and suspension.

Beyond sheer power, the new FL5 has some significant improvements - An enlarged radiator grille increases airflow by an impressive 48%, while a lighter flywheel and refined rev-match system ensure seamless transitions between gears. The six-speed manual transmission benefits from a high-rigidity lever and optimized shift gate pattern, offering drivers more precise and direct shifts. Complementing these enhancements are a helical-type LSD and an aluminum shift knob, adding to the tactile engagement of the driving experience.

The FL5 Type R's suspension system has also been tuned for increased rigidity, optimizing straight-line stability and steering feedback. Electronically controlled dampers offer three drive modes—Comfort, Sport, and R+—alongside a customizable Individual setting.

Do watch the video and let us know your thoughts - do you think the FL5 is better than the FK8R?

Thanks again David for letting me check out your car. It is well setup, and you don't need to do anything else. Also, anytime you are ready, let's do it again!
