Alai, a residence crafted by Architect and her team, stands not far from the shores of Chennai. Aptly named after the Tamil word for "waves," this home embodies the rhythmic undulations of the sea. Alai serves as a tribute to tradition and a tranquil way of life in a Chennai household. Interestingly, the client's daughter shares the same name, further intertwining the essence of the home with familial bonds.

The fundamental concept was to artfully arrange all their spatial needs along a prominent central axis, with a courtyard serving as the heart of this captivating indoor-outdoor abode. Each room, on every level, was meticulously crafted to offer mesmerizing views of the court nestled at its core.

What resulted was a breathtaking fusion of bricks and intricate motifs, transforming these walls into genuine masterpieces. And the Brick joinery, each brick laid with precision, each pattern thoughtfully conceived; they became narrators of skillful craftsmanship and boundless creativity. These walls now breathe life into the dwelling, embodying tales of tradition while exemplifying contemporary artistry.

Yet, this modern abode transcends mere bricks and patterns; it harmoniously blends contemporary design with vernacular architecture techniques. The incorporation of filler slabs enhances the structural efficiency, while a rammed earth wall, serving as an accent, imparts a touch of rustic authenticity. Traditional Athangudi tiles, customized to seamlessly merge with modern sensibilities, offering a unique flooring experience.
