In a landmark decision on March 14, Judge James Mellor of the United Kingdom ruled that Craig Wright, an Australian computer scientist, is not Satoshi Nakamoto, the enigmatic creator of Bitcoin. This conclusion came after the Crypto Open Patent Alliance (COPA) sued Wright, who has claimed to be Nakamoto since 2016. COPA sought to stop Wright from further asserting this identity, citing massive document forgery in his claims. The trial, which began on February 5, followed Wright's refusal to settle out of court in January. COPA, with members like Coinbase and Meta, aims to foster cryptocurrency technology growth without patent barriers. In 2023, Wright had sued several Bitcoin Core developers and companies for copyright infringement related to the Bitcoin white paper and blockchain. The Bitcoin Legal Defense Fund called these lawsuits "frivolous but effective," deterring many from continuing Bitcoin development. Wright's claim to the Bitcoin white paper and its code, now under an MIT open-source license, faces restriction by a court injunction.
